Q4 FBA Storage Fees: Why UK Sellers Keep Overflow Stock on Pallets
Every year it's the same story. Your stock arrives for Christmas, you send it all into Amazon, and then the storage bill lands. From October to December, Amazon's UK storage fees roughly double, and capacity limits can stop you sending in everything you've bought anyway.
There's a simpler way to handle it, and it's what a lot of established sellers already do: keep the bulk of your stock on pallets with a UK prep centre, and send it into Amazon in smaller, regular batches. Here's why FBA overflow storage makes sense in Q4, and what it actually costs.
What Amazon charges you to store stock in Q4
Amazon charges FBA storage per cubic foot, per month. For 2026, the UK rates published from Amazon's European rate card are:
- Standard-size items (most categories): about £0.76 per cubic foot from January to September, rising to about £1.51 from October to December.
- Oversize items: about £0.55, rising to about £0.87 in Q4.
On top of the base rate there are extra charges that hit sellers who overstock:
- Storage utilisation surcharge: if you hold a lot of stock compared with what you sell (more than around 22 weeks of cover), Amazon adds a surcharge per cubic foot.
- Aged inventory surcharge: stock that sits in Amazon's network for more than about 8 months picks up additional monthly charges, rising sharply after a year.
- Peak fulfilment fee: from mid-October to mid-January, Amazon adds a small per-item fee to most FBA orders.
Amazon changes these fees regularly, so check the fee preview in your Seller Central account for your own SKUs. The direction is always the same, though: in Q4, every cubic foot of stock sitting in Amazon costs you more.
Capacity limits make it worse
Even if you're happy to pay, Amazon may not let you send everything in. FBA capacity limits cap how much inventory you can hold, and they're tied to your sales history and Inventory Performance Index. Sellers who buy heavily for Christmas often find they've got more stock than space, right when demand peaks.
That leaves stock sitting in a container, a garage or a supplier's warehouse, and that's when things go wrong: missed restocks, stock-outs on your best sellers, and a scramble to find somewhere to put it.
The alternative: pallet storage with a prep centre
Instead of sending everything to Amazon at once, you send your stock to a prep centre on pallets. It's stored there, and you replenish Amazon in batches that match your sales. Amazon only ever holds a few weeks of stock, so you avoid most of the peak storage cost and stay inside your capacity limits.
At Vibe65, a standard pallet (120 × 100 × 180 cm) costs £6.50 a week, and every account gets 30 days' free storage. A full pallet holds roughly 70 cubic feet of stock, so that works out at around £0.40 per cubic foot per month, about a quarter of Amazon's Q4 rate for standard-size items.
When it's time to restock Amazon, we pick the pallet (£5.00), prep the units you need (FNSKU labelling £0.30 a unit, polybagging £0.20 a unit), and build cartons (£0.85 each) or a pallet (£8.50) for dispatch to the fulfilment centre. A worked example
Say you've bought 10 pallets of standard-size stock for Christmas, but you'll only sell around 2 pallets' worth a month.
- Send it all to Amazon: you're paying Q4 storage on all 10 pallets' worth of volume, plus a likely utilisation surcharge because you're holding months of cover. That's if your capacity limit lets you send it in at all.
- Store with a prep centre: 10 pallets cost £65 a week with us (after the first 30 days free), and Amazon only ever holds what you'll sell in the next few weeks. You replenish every week or two, and nothing goes out of stock.
Your exact saving depends on your product size, sell-through rate and Amazon's fees for your category, but for most sellers holding more than a couple of months of stock, the maths favours pallet storage.
Why it suits fast-moving Q4 sellers
- No stock-outs: your buffer stock is ready to prep and ship whenever Amazon runs low, and our FBA prep turnaround is 48 hours, with 10% off for every day we're late.
- Lower aged-stock risk: slow sellers stay with us rather than racking up Amazon's aged inventory surcharges.
- Flexibility after Christmas: stock that didn't sell can go to other channels (Shopify, eBay, TikTok Shop, B2B), which we also fulfil, instead of being stuck in Amazon or paying removal fees.
If you're still deciding whether to outsource, our guide to prep centre vs self-prep is a good place to start, and why fast prep turnaround matters explains why speed is everything in peak season.
Final thoughts
Amazon is built to sell your stock, not to store it cheaply. In Q4 especially, keeping your overflow on pallets with a prep centre and feeding Amazon in batches cuts storage costs, keeps you inside capacity limits and keeps your best sellers in stock.
